Can You Attend a Conference in India on a Tourist Visa?
Generally, no. If you are travelling to India to attend a formal conference, seminar or workshop, obtain the appropriate conference-purpose visa before travelling. A Tourist Visa should not be treated as permission to attend simply because you are an unpaid delegate, will only listen, or plan to include sightseeing.
The practical next step depends on your event, passport eligibility and whether you are applying from abroad or already in India.
Why is a Tourist Visa unsuitable for conference attendance?
Attending a conference in India on a tourist visa involves a different purpose from a recreational visit. A tourist visa covers activities such as sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives, and certain specified short courses or other permitted activities. It does not provide general authorisation for formal conference participation.
Do not assume that being an audience member makes the visit tourism. Likewise, a free registration ticket or an invitation from a private organiser does not establish that a Tourist Visa is appropriate.
A recreational cultural visit should be assessed separately from an academic symposium, professional seminar or organised workshop. If the event’s classification is unclear, send its programme and invitation to the Indian mission responsible for your application.
Which visa should you apply for?
Instead of planning a conference in India on a tourist visa, check the relevant conference-purpose route:
|
Route |
What to check |
|
Regular Conference Visa |
Follow the responsible Indian embassy or consulate’s application instructions and event requirements. |
|
Electronic conference-purpose visa |
The official portal currently lists e-Conference Visa, with 30-day validity from arrival and multiple entries. Confirm your eligibility and granted conditions. |
Check the purpose and category carefully rather than selecting a general business option based only on its name. For a fuller explanation of the routes, read our India Conference Visa guide.
What if you already have a Tourist Visa?
If you already hold permission for a holiday, do not assume you can add a conference in India on a tourist visa without checking.
Before departure: contact the relevant Indian mission about obtaining the appropriate conference permission. MHA guidance provides a mechanism for an existing long-duration visa to be placed temporarily on hold when a short-duration conference visa is issued.
Already in India: contact the FRRO/FRO before attending. MHA’s published prior-permission procedure expressly covers certain existing Business, Employment, Student and Research Visa holders; it does not establish the same permission for Tourist Visa holders. Ask for instructions applicable to your status.
The India e‑Visas are non-convertible, so do not plan on changing an e‑Tourist Visa into conference permission after arrival.
What should you confirm with the organiser?
Before replacing plans for a conference in India on a tourist visa, ask the organiser for:
- An invitation identifying the event, dates, venue and your participation.
- The applicable Ministry of External Affairs political-clearance documents.
- Confirmation of whether MHA clearance is required for the event and your circumstances.
The electronic portal’s FAQ marks MHA event clearance as optional, while another document list includes it without that qualification. Resolve this with the organiser and processing authority before submitting.
You may also wish to add sightseeing. MHA guidance permits tourism alongside a regular conference visit within the permission granted; check your actual visa dates and conditions.
Planning your trip? Contact Indian Immigration Services to ask whether our e‑visa service can assist with your conference-purpose application. Confirm eligibility before applying. We provide independent assistance; the relevant Indian authorities decide visa applications.
