Do You Need a Passport to Travel Within India? ID Rules

Indian citizens generally do not need a passport for ordinary domestic travel in India. For flights, they can use another accepted ID. Foreign visitors should carry their original valid passport; OCI cardholders must keep a valid foreign passport throughout their stay. The documents you must show depend on the carrier, booking and destination.

Which documents should you carry?

Traveller or booking Passport and ID guidance
Indian citizen on a domestic flight A passport is one option; another ID accepted by the airline can be used.
Foreign visitor on a domestic flight Carry your original valid passport and check the operating airline’s documentation rules.
OCI cardholder Keep a valid foreign passport throughout your stay. Carry your OCI card as evidence of status.
IRCTC Foreign Tourist Quota passenger, including an NRI A valid passport is required for this booking facility.

What ID can Indian citizens use for domestic flights?

Aadhaar, voter ID, PAN and a driving licence are common alternatives to a passport. Check the airline’s accepted-document list and ensure your booking matches your ID.

Air India also lists recognised student identification and certain other photo IDs. Its guidance accepts documents through DigiLocker. Check which document and digital format your carrier accepts before relying on a digital copy.

What about foreign visitors and OCI cardholders?

SpiceJet’s domestic conditions specify a passport as the accepted photo ID for foreign nationals. Confirm the requirements of the airline operating your flight rather than assuming another carrier follows identical rules.

Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status does not confer Indian citizenship. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ OCI FAQ requires cardholders to keep a valid passport throughout their stay. Carrying an OCI card is also advisable to demonstrate status; this advice is separate from the documents a carrier requires for a particular journey.

If you entered under a nationality-specific document arrangement, including one applicable to Nepalese or Bhutanese nationals, confirm your domestic carrier’s requirements before booking. International entry-document arrangements do not automatically establish what a domestic airline will accept.

Do you need a passport for trains?

IRCTC’s e-ticket terms identify a foreign passenger’s national passport as the authorised ID. Indian passengers can use another prescribed identity document, subject to their booking rules. The Foreign Tourist Quota facility also requires passport details, including for non-resident Indians (NRIs). An Indian citizen using this quota should not rely on general advice that a passport is unnecessary.

Can children travel without a passport?

Indian children can generally travel domestically without a passport, but they may still need identity or age documents. Air India requires proof of identity for infants and minors, including those travelling with an adult. Check the operating airline’s requirements for the child’s age and for unaccompanied travel. Do not apply advice for Indian children automatically to foreign-national children.

What else should you check?

Confirm any destination-specific permits, including for protected or restricted areas. OCI status does not remove special-permission requirements for such areas. Keep your ticket, accepted ID and applicable immigration records available. These domestic travel ID rules do not replace the conditions governing entry into or stay in India.

For a future international trip to India, review the requirements for your passport and existing travel status before choosing an application service.
