Is Hyderabad safe for tourists?

Yes. Hyderabad is generally a safe and welcoming city for tourists.  Visitors can enjoy its history, architecture, and cuisine without much concern, as simple precautions, such as staying cautious in crowded places, using reliable transportation, and observing local traditions allow them to appreciate it.   But, as with any big city, one should be wary and apply common-sense safety precautions.

General Safety

Hyderabad has a reputation for being relatively peaceful and tourist-friendly in India.  The crime rate against foreigners is relatively low, though petty theft can occasionally occur in crowded areas.   Most of the popular tourist destinations like the Charminar, Golconda Fort, Hussain Sagar Lake, and Ramoji Film City are usually safe to visit in the daytime.   Police presence is visible in major areas, and tourist police are available in central zones to assist visitors.

Safety for Solo and Female Travelers

Women and other solo travelers often come to Hyderabad without any significant problems. However, it is advisable to:

  • Avoid walking alone in isolated areas at night.
  • Use reliable transportation such as prepaid taxis, ride-hailing apps, or hotel-arranged cabs.
  • Dress modestly when visiting religious or traditional sites in order to honor the local culture.

While incidents of harassment are not common, women should remain alert in busy public places, as in any large city.

Transportation and Traffic

The Hyderabad traffic is usually hectic and there is much congestion during rush hours.   Road safety is a bigger concern than crime.   Instead of hailing any auto-rickshaws, tourists are encouraged to use the benefits of ride-hailing apps, such as Ola, or Uber, which are much safer and more reliable.   Pedestrian crossings are not always respected, so tourists should be extra cautious when crossing the road.

Health and Food Safety

Hyderabad is also known as a food city especially because of the globally known Hyderabadi Biryani.   Street food is popular, but travelers with sensitive stomachs should stick to clean stalls or reputable restaurants.   Take only bottled or treated water.  Pharmacies are widely available, and major hospitals can be accessed quickly in case of emergencies.

Common Scams and Precautions

Small scams can also happen, as it is the case in most tourist destinations. These scams are not severe but are usually minor inconveniences such as bargaining disputes or inflated prices.  Examples include overcharging by auto-rickshaw drivers or inflated prices in tourist-heavy markets. To avoid this:

  • If not using an app, agree on the fare with the rickshaw driver before boarding.
  • Shop at good shops or negotiate in good taste at bazaars.
  • Put personal items in a safe place in densely populated places to avoid pick pocketing.
  • It’s also advisable to keep digital copies of your ID and emergency contact numbers.
