Which public holiday is mandatory in India?

A public holiday, sometimes known as a national holiday or legal holiday, is a non-working day set aside by law each year. Choosing which public holidays to provide employees as vacation is a critical issue for every company's human resources management. Public holidays in India are associated with local celebrations, historical events, and language demography. These holidays are declared on a calendar year basis.

The three national public holidays in India, which are mandatory, are:

  • Republic Day (January 26th)
  • Independence Day (August 15th)
  • Gandhi Jayanti (October 2nd)

Labor Day or International Workers' Day (May 1st) is also a mandatory holiday in several jurisdictions.

These days, all firms, regardless of their legal status or ownership (public or private), should normally remain closed. If the nature of operations does not allow for closure on a public holiday, applicable legislation gives remedies such as additional compensation/wages or compensatory leave based on the category of work.
