Who Can Apply for an Indian e-Visa?

Foreign nationals whose passport nationality is included in India's current e-Visa eligible-country list can apply for an Indian e-Visa, provided they meet the requirements for the relevant visa category.

The e-Visa is available for eligible travelers visiting India for purposes such as tourism, sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives, business, medical treatment, and other permitted activities. The type of e-Visa available depends on the applicant's nationality and purpose of travel.

People of Pakistani origin are not eligible for an Indian e-Visa. Certain passport and travel-document holders are also excluded from the e-Visa scheme.

The eligibility rules also cover the type of travel document, passport validity, purpose of travel, and other conditions.

Which Nationalities Are Eligible for an Indian e-Visa?

Nationals of 175 countries and territories are currently eligible for India's e-Visa scheme. Eligible nationalities span North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. The list includes countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and the UAE, among many others.

Because the Government of India can update the eligible-country list, travelers should always verify their nationality before applying.

Who Is Not Eligible for an Indian e-Visa?

You cannot apply for an e-Visa if:

  • You hold a Pakistani passport.
  • You are of Pakistani origin.
  • You or your parents or grandparents, whether paternal or maternal, were born in or permanently resident in Pakistan.
  • You hold a Diplomatic or Official passport.
  • You hold a Laissez-passer or another travel document instead of an ordinary passport.
  • Your details are endorsed on a parent's or spouse's passport. Each traveler must have their own passport.

Applicants who are not eligible for an e-Visa may need to apply for a regular visa through an Indian Mission, depending on their circumstances.

How Can I Confirm If My Country is Eligible?

The Government of India maintains the official list of countries and territories eligible for the e-Visa facility and provides the current country, airport, and seaport lists for the India e-Visa.

You can also check your nationality through our India visa requirements checker.

Because eligibility can change, always verify the current requirements before starting your application.

Which e-Visa Categories Are Available?

Eligible travelers can apply for different e-Visa categories depending on their purpose of travel. The Government of India currently reports 14 e-Visa sub-categories.

Common categories include:

  • e-Tourist Visa – for eligible tourism and sightseeing purposes
  • e-Business Visa – for eligible business activities
