Can I go back to India after getting a green card?

Yes, you can go back to India after getting a Green Card. A US green card permits a person to live and work in the United States while also beginning the process of becoming a naturalized US citizen. This card gives the possessor a permanent resident of the United States, granting them many of the same advantages as a citizen, but not all. However, your Green Card does not invalidate your Indian citizenship.

  • Re-entry permit: If you plan to be outside the U.S. for more than six months, it's highly recommended to apply for a re-entry permit before leaving. This document helps establish your intent to return to the U.S.
  • Indian Visa: As a Green Card holder, you may still need an Indian visa to enter India. Travelers can apply for an Indian visa online.
