How to Prepare Your Photo for an Indian e-Visa

To take a correct visa photo, face the camera directly, keep your eyes open, and remove your glasses. Use a plain white background and a square image that shows your entire head.

Framing

• Use a square photograph with equal width and height.
• Centre your head, showing everything from the top of your hair to the bottom of your chin.
• Leave enough space to avoid cutting off any part of your head.
• Do not add borders or frames.

Background and lighting

Choose a plain white background without patterns, objects or other people. Use even lighting so there are no shadows on your face or behind you.

Your face

Look directly at the camera with your eyes open and your full face clearly visible. Remove your glasses.

Headwear

Keep your full face unobstructed. If you wear religious headwear, check the applicable photo instructions before uploading; avoid relying on an unsupported rule requiring your ears, neck and shoulders to be exposed.

Image quality

Use a recent, sharp photograph that reflects your current appearance. Avoid filters or retouching that changes your facial features. When resizing or compressing the file, check that your face remains clear.

File format and size

Save your portrait as a JPEG file between 10 KB and 1 MB, with equal width and height. Check any additional dimensions displayed in the upload form.

The official portal’s general instructions specify a white background, while its detailed photo checklist also allows a plain light-coloured background. Choosing white follows both instructions.

Does the photo have to be exactly 350 × 350 pixels?

The Indian e-Visa photo requirements should not be interpreted as requiring exactly 350 × 350 pixels in every case. 350 × 350 pixels is a minimum, rather than the only permitted dimensions.

Also, 350 × 350 pixels does not automatically mean a printed photograph measuring 2 × 2 inches. For an online upload, check the digital dimensions and file size separately.

Is the portrait the same as the passport upload?

No. The Indian e-Visa photo requirements apply to your separate portrait. The passport upload is a different document showing your photograph and personal details on the biographical page. Prepare both files and place each in the correct upload field.
