No, you cannot go back to India without a passport. In terms of the provisions in the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920, and the Rules made thereunder, every foreigner entering India must have a valid national passport or any other internationally recognized travel document establishing his/her nationality and identity and bearing his/ her photograph, and a valid visa for India granted by an authorized Indian representative abroad. Without a valid passport, you do not have permission to enter India.
When applying for a visa, your passport should be valid for at least six months. It should include at least two blank pages for stamping by the Immigration Officer. All visas will be valid from the date of issuing.
