Official Indian mission guidance provides an Employment Visa route for honorary work with NGOs registered in India, including work without a salary. This means the organisation, duties and terms of the placement matter alongside its duration.

Seek confirmation from the relevant Indian embassy or consulate if:

• Your placement involves working for a registered NGO.
• The programme lasts longer than one month.
• You will receive a stipend, honorarium or benefits in exchange for your duties.
• Your role includes responsibilities that may fall outside short-term voluntary work.

What should you confirm before accepting a placement?

Before deciding to volunteer in India with an e-Visa, obtain a written description of the programme from your host.

Ask for the organisation’s legal name, registration details, work location, start and end dates, and a clear description of your responsibilities. Request a breakdown of any money, accommodation, meals or other support offered.

If accommodation or meals are provided in exchange for work, ask the Indian mission whether that arrangement constitutes consideration. The absence of a cash salary alone does not resolve the question.

Send the full details when requesting visa guidance. A host’s reassurance that previous volunteers used tourist visas is not a substitute for confirmation that your own activities qualify.
