Do you need a visa for 2 weeks in India?

Yes, you do need a visa to visit India for two weeks. Nevertheless, in recent years, India has streamlined the process by introducing the e-Visa system, which is now much easier because tourists can apply online and travel.

Tourist Visa Requirement

When you are going to India as a tourist, on a leisure trip, to explore Indian culture, to meet relatives and friends, you will generally require a Tourist Visa. The Indian Tourist Visa comes in various periods of validity (30 days, 1 year or 5 years). The 30-day Tourist e-Visa is the most convenient type of e-visa in case of a two-week trip.

  • Validity: The 30-day Tourist e-Visa is valid for 30 days from the date of your first entry into India, and you must enter the country within 30 days from the date of visa approval
  • Entries allowed: It generally allows double entry, meaning you can leave India once and re-enter within the 30-day validity period if needed.
  • Processing: It can be done online and once it is approved it normally takes a few days.

Other Types of Visas

If your purpose is business, medical treatment, or attending a conference, you will need to apply for a different visa type such as a Business Visa or Medical Visa, and you will be required to obtain a certain type of visa like a Business Visa or a Medical Visa. They also offer e- visa options, but the validity and conditions might vary.

Visa Exemptions

Visa exemptions are limited — citizens of Nepal and Bhutan can enter India without a visa, while citizens of the Maldives can visit visa-free for up to 90 days (except if arriving from mainland China). For citizens of most other countries, including Europe, North America, Australia, and most of Asia, a visa is required regardless of trip length.

Documents Needed for an Indian e-Visa

To request Indian tourist e- Visa, you will broadly require:

  1. A valid passport of at least 6 months of validity on date of arrival.
  2. A digital passport-size photograph.
  3. A scanned copy of the passport’s bio page.
  4. The visa fee (Depending on the nationality).
  5. Information about your trip like flight tickets and hotel.

Please note: document requirements may vary slightly depending on your nationality.

Why You Should Apply in Advance

Although the e-Visa process is online and quick, the delays may occur as a result of technical failure or large volumes of applications.  During peak travel seasons, processing can take longer than expected, so it is advisable to apply at least 7–10 days before departure. Bring with you a printed version of your successful e-Visa in order to show at the Indian immigration
